Day 518 | Rhynie Railway Station shelter: why not stop here?

35 km | zzOz total: 16,758 km

Suddenly I’m transported back 3 years, I’m cruising along the fine gravel on the Riesling Trail in the Clare Valley, terrific scenery with the new spring growth on the vines a vibrant green against the golden grass.

You sense I really like this area.

Last time through I stopped and sampled many of the wines of the area, this time I just decided on a few, one yesterday, the good value Tim Adams and today it’s two, the major one O’Leary Walker.

I haven’t actually drunk much wine since I passed through Margaret River down near Cape Leeuwin more than a year ago, in fact I’ve even, almost, given up drinking beers, partly budgetary constraints, partly because my generally healthy and well tuned body only takes a single beer to get me pissed and want to take up a more horizontal positioning.

The wine has put me in a pensive mood however, to me it represents a communal occasion, social, a few laughs with close friends, a life I once enjoyed with a loving partner, (that can change abruptly), and now I’m a more solitary creature. Drinking ain’t something that should be indulged on one’s own.

There’s cheery banter with the cellar staff but there remains a certain hollowness when you are not with your gal, just too many memories peaking out from behind that closed door.
