Day 401 | Alau Beach: fishy times

rest day

Went around to the wharf at Seisia and watched some fishing.

I don’t have any easy way to cook up any catch and for a semi-vegetarian it’s enough just to stand and be entertained. It was slow going with the tourists, half a dozen lines in the water, the system being you catch a herring one side of the wharf as live bait then attempt something considerably bigger on the other.

I waited an hour with not much action: there was a 3.5 m croc on the beach on the island just offshore; you could see beautiful see through garfish swording about; a big shark came in at pace and circled briefly.

Then a local turned up, the herring jumped on the hook in about 30 seconds, a few exciting bites on the other side with fast paced big fish then half an hour later he was wandering away with a 60 cm long Barramundi, the prized fish around northern Australia, the tourists with their rods looking on still contemplating steak for dinner.

Just great to spend some time lolling about for a change.
