Day 6 | through the Otways to Blanket Bay: close encounters of the reptilian kind

52 km | Heading west total: 307 km

It’s quite a crank up the hills behind Apollo Bay.

It goes on a bit and I get in the hill climb groove.

But then the payoff: a huge view back the way I’ve come over the last few days.

There’s more though. I spot a Otway National Park track heading off into the forest, a dotted line on my map: 18 km of mainly downhill on a track only used by Park vehicles, there’s a boom gate near the main road to stop cars but not random bike tourers looking for a little adventure.

A hard surface that means I’m not even pedalling all that much.

A sudden stop to try to get a recalcitrant tiger snake to move from the middle of the track: very reluctantly after a while it slithers off, away from me.

The track twists and turns through huge trees most of the way. Now that made the day.

Is this my best day of riding ever?
