Day 386 | Wenlock River bushcamp: actually a billabong nearby

55 km | zzOz total: 10,955 km

Lacklustre.

I’m down on energy, picked up some sinus issue in Cooktown which is taking some toll.

The road today wasn’t too bad, plenty of up, some down, but things improved dramatically as I took the Lockhart River road as I turned east to take a look at the Iron Range National Park. It’s about 150 km down to the coast at the 4WD nirvana at Chilli Beach. On the way back I can take the little used Frenchmans Track, there’s a difficult crossing at the Pascoe River that deters most 4WDers but not your average intrepid bike tourer, and cuts off 65 km of that Development Road.

I stopped a little early, around 3 pm, at a picturesque billabong, white water lily flowers, parrots in large numbers, etc, reminiscent of similar evenings on the Gibb River Road. I immediately crashed out for a couple of hours.

At least I’m back on my own after staying at paid accommodations for 4 of the last 5 nights with the accompanying troupe with their conversation.

Now the full moon is rising and small bats are circling at great pace.
