Day 419 | Old Faithful waterhole: Normanby River, Lakefield National Park

76 km | zzOz total: 12,418 km

A couple of months ago my favourite stainless steel mug, one I had stumbled on in Gregory National Park, yes, that long ago, sprang a leak. The bottom part of the handle pulled out taking with it a small piece of the cup, a pinhole sized hole resulting.

What to do?

In the end I just bunged a piece of gaffer tape over the hole, on the outside, and have since used it to mix the morning milk, ie, just for cold fluids.

Today I went to cook up my nightly spag and noticed the water level dropping, my leg getting wet. Believe it or not today I had gained a hole in the bottom of my only pot. Seems the metal hook on one of my bungee ropes holding the bags on the trailer had been rubbing against the pot as I bashed my way over the firm but often bumpy road today.

There was only one possible course of action: I put a piece of tin foil from my Whisperlite windshield over the hole and covered it with a small strip of gaffer tape, all on the inside. Seemed to work, and really only has to stand a short test of time until I get back to Cairns where I may find a replacement, but when your diet is mainly porridge in the morning, cook that up, and spag in the evening, more heat applied, I’ve got the fingers crossed.

The next pot will be stainless, try sticking a hole in that.
