Day 454 | Near Nicholson River: out on the Savannah Highway

87 km | zzOz total: 14,075 km

Many people think that Australia is flat, in the most part, but it doesn’t take long seated on a bicycle saddle to realise there’s plenty of undulation on this rather wrinkled continent.

Well, there’s finally been the odd day recently when there has been some dead flat landscape, we’re right on the Gulf of Carpentaria here, and today was the best of them. Lots of flat, wind not behind but then again not usually a full on head wind.

I’m riding on the blacktop for a day as I head almost over to the Northern Territory border but tomorrow, early on, I’ll make a left hand turn and it will be mostly south for the next 2 months.

While there’s plenty on that route to Birdsville where there ain’t much in the way of topographical oscillation looking at the map I see that it’s somewhat of a climb to get to Mt Isa, elevation around 350 m, 1100 feet.

On the level doesn’t do much for me, frankly I like those bumps.
