Day 273 | another day in Meekatharra: with a tour of the major sights

12 km | Heading west total: 12,765 km

Convicted corporate criminal Alan Bond cranked up the gold fields of WA back in the 1980s.

Meekatharra was one of them and there are a couple of legacies of the era: on one side of the road is a massive hole in the ground; on the other the huge mine manager’s house with a high brick fence around it where Bond used to stay when he jetted in for an inspection of the ingots.

But the mines have mostly closed down around here. The last of the gold is apparently right under the town and the local government is currently refusing to relocate.

The town is dying: the three pubs have few patrons. I was one of them.

The least I could do to help out.
